Her very first job teaching was in the small town of Pioneer, California, in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. As a teenager in Southern California, Evelyn played accordion and string bass in a dance band at the local military base. She was also a Life Guard at the local YMCA for several summers. After graduating from the University of California, Berkeley, Evelyn and her friend Alice Remaile drove a Model A Ford from Riverside California to New York City, stopping in Illinois to work as waitresses to earn gas money. In New York She worked as a clerk-typist at the Empire State Building for a year before returning to California.
