Obituary Evelyn Marie Jones Longtime Las Vegas resident Evelyn Marie (Anderson) Jones, 96, passed away peacefully in her home on May 2, 2024. Evelyn had a more than three decades-long career teaching in Las Vegas, first on the Westside and then at Rex Bell and Lewis E. Rowe elementary schools. Her very first job teaching was in the small town of Pioneer, California, in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. As a teenager in Southern California, Evelyn played accordion and string bass in a dance band at the local military base. She was also a Life Guard at the local YMCA for several summers. After graduating from the University of California, Berkeley, Evelyn and her friend Alice Remaile drove a Model A Ford from Riverside California to New York City, stopping in Illinois to work as waitresses to earn gas money. In New York She worked as a clerk-typist at the Empire State Building for a year before returning to California. In 1954, Evelyn married John Millard Jones, and they moved to Las Vegas and over the years had three children. After retiring, Evelyn picked up the string bass again and played in the Henderson Symphony Orchestra and other community groups. Evelyn was a proud member of the Las Vegas Jazz Society and the Southern Nevada Chapter of Mensa, where she once served as LocSec in 1988. Evelyn was beloved Nana to Kellie Marie Jones, Catherine Marie Lepp and Henry Alexander Lepp. She was held dear by her children, Clifton Lee Jones, Leslie Ann Jones, and by her son-in-law Louis Chunovic. She loved and dearly remembered her son Keith Millard Jones, who died in 1985. Evelyn, who was born in Tucson, loved the desert, Sagurao cactus and the smell of creosote bush after the rain. In her very old age, Evelyn enjoyed visiting and talking with friends, children and grandchildren, listening to history books, and being caught up on the latest political and space news.
