Mark Anthony Matthews

Mark Anthony Matthews, 57, of Las Vegas, Nevada, formerly of Erie, Pennsylvania, passed away at his home on January 9, 2024, after a lengthy illness.

Mark was born in Erie, Pennsylvania on August 17, 1966, to Anthony and Sophia (Grychowski) Matthews of Orlando, FL, who survive him.

Mark graduated from Cathedral Preparatory School in Erie, Pennsylvania, and from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio with a BS Accounting degree. Later, he held various Information Technology positions for employers in Akron, Ohio, and Milwaukee, Wisconsin. During his college years at Case, and while he lived in Cleveland, Mark worked as a scorekeeper for the Cleveland Indians and the Browns. Although he absolutely enjoyed this job, he remained an avid, life-long Pittsburgh Steelers fan.

In 2004, he relocated to Las Vegas, where he was employed by Clark County, Nevada as an Information Technology Supervisor, for the past 19 years.  Early in his career with Clark County he participated in a Clark County Leadership Program (Class of 2005) where he said he met the love of his life, his wife, Karen.

Throughout his time in Las Vegas, he co-chaired the annual Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure for many years, he was an active member of the Service Employees International Union (SEIU), Project Homeless Connect and St. Francis De Sales Catholic Church. Mark was an exceedingly kind, loving person, who was never a stranger to anyone who needed a helping hand.

Mark is survived by his loving wife, Karen Cale-Powell, stepsons, Gregory Cale and Joseph Garrett Powell of Las Vegas NV; mother and father, Sophia and Anthony Matthews of Orlando, FL and sister, Sheri Kiddoo and niece, Leah Kiddoo, of Orlando, FL; aunt Sandy and uncle Rick Grychowski of Erie, PA; aunt Christina and uncle Andy and cousin, Thomas Justice, of San Diego, CA; and cousins Christopher Grychowski, Laurie Bowers, Richie Grychowski, Nicole Penpek, and Antoni Grychowski all from Erie, PA.

A celebration of life mass will be held in honor of Mark on Thursday, February 22nd, 2024 at 10:30am at St. Francis De Sales, Roman Catholic Church located at 1111 N. Michael Way, Las Vegas, NV 89108.  A gathering will follow immediately after mass at the church hall.
